You know it's good if you've made it yourself!

Well isn't that disturbingly optimistic.

It's basically bread pudding polished up to shake off associations with waste-not-want-not. Bread pudding is a yummy thing--rather like baked french toast. I usually just smash up bread that has gone hard (a good re-use for a Tyvek shipping bag), crusts and all, and dot a bit of butter on top. It's also good with chocolate chips instead of currants. I've seen it made with brioche, which just seems over the top.

i made a bread pudding a few weeks ago with some leftover croissants. it was luscious! i think brioche bread pudding is an excellent idea, as opposed to throwing the brioche away.

Oh certainly! I just have a hard time imagining leftover brioche.

Bread pudding is one of my favorite foods ever.

Well I'm guessing this recipe is English as it's called Bread and Butter Pudding not Bread Pudding - which in the UK is something completely different. Being both UK-born and Australian, I call the milk-based pudding B&BP and yes it's made with currants or sultanas (which I believe are called golden raisins in the US, no?). Often made with croissants if served in a cafe although that's too expensive for family cooking!

The truly austerity-related Bread Pudding OTOH is made with torn up pieces of stale bread soaked in warm water or tea until soft then squeezed out a bit, mixed with dried fruit, spices, eggs and melted butter then baked until set. As a kid growing up in England, both bread pudding and B&BP were part of my mother's arsenal of Sunday puddings (along with Rice Pudding and Sago Pudding).

Hmm. I decided to make this recipe, and when I gave it to my British-born husband, he called it "bread pudding" and said that he'd never heard of "bread-and-butter pudding".
